Option 1: The Classic Coastal Drive

Route: Hue City → Lap An Lagoon → Lang Co → Hai Van Pass → Marble Mountains → Hoi An (4-5 hours)

This is the postcard version of the trip, and the one most travelers pick first. You’ll watch rice fields give way to a glassy Lap An lagoon, dip your feet at Lang Co Bay – one of the most beautiful bays in the world, then climb the switchbacks of Hai Van Pass with the coastline dropping away beside you. Marble Mountains closes the day with cool caves and carved pagodas before the final stretch into Hoi An.

Good to know: Stops total 1.5 to 2 hours. Weather on the pass can shift quickly, and Marble Mountains involves stairs.

Option 2: The Ghost City & Spiritual Culture

Route: Hue City → An Bang Cemetery → Lap An Lagoon → Hai Van Pass → Marble Mountains → Hoi An (6-7 hours)

This route starts with something most visitors never expect: a “city” of elaborate, colorful family tombs, some built more like small palaces than graves. It’s an unusual, striking stop that says a lot about local beliefs and family devotion. From there, it rejoins the classic scenery, rolling through Lap An Lagoon, over Hai Van Pass, and into Marble Mountains.

Good to know: Adds about 60 minutes versus Route 1. Please stay respectful — it’s an active burial ground for local families, not a tourist attraction built for visitors.

Option 3: The Jungle Trekking & Mountain Adventure

Route: Hue City → Bach Ma National Park → Lap An Lagoon → Hai Van Pass → Hoi An (8-9 hours)

This is the only route that heads into the mountains before it even reaches the coast. Bach Ma National Park sits 1,450 meters above sea level, just 40 km from Hue, with noticeably cooler air, forest trails, and a good chance of spotting local wildlife. Light trekking is optional here before the route rejoins the coast at Lap An Lagoon and Hai Van Pass.

Good to know: Allow 2 to 3 hours for the park, more if you trek. Bring proper walking shoes — mountain weather can change fast.

Option 4: The Golden Bridge & Mountain Heights

Route: Hue City → Lap An Lagoon → Hai Van Pass → Ba Na Hills & Golden Bridge → Marble Mountains → Hoi An (~8-9 hours)

This is the route for people who want a full day out, not just a transfer. After the coastal warm-up, a cable car lifts you into the mountains at Ba Na Hills, where the Golden Bridge seems to float between two giant stone hands. Gardens, a mock-European village, and cool mountain air fill out the visit before you head back down toward Hoi An.

Good to know: Ba Na Hills alone needs 3 to 4 hours. This is the longest of the six routes, so plan for a full day, and note the cable car can pause in strong wind.

Option 5: The Ocean View & Lady Buddha Sanctuary

Route: Hue City → Lap An Lagoon → Hai Van Pass → Linh Ung Pagoda (Monkey Mountain) → Marble Mountains → Hoi An (~6 hours)

After crossing Hai Van Pass, this route swings toward Son Tra Peninsula, home to Linh Ung Pagoda and its large Lady Buddha statue watching over the sea. It’s a calm, reflective stop with wide ocean views, sitting nicely between the drama of the pass and the busier energy of Marble Mountains.

Good to know: Adds roughly 30 to 45 minutes. It’s an active place of worship, so shoulders and knees should be covered.

Option 6: The Champa Kingdom History Journey

Route: Hue City → Lap An Lagoon → Hai Van Pass → My Son Sanctuary → Hoi An (9-10 hours)

This route trades one coastal stop for something deeper: centuries-old Champa temple ruins tucked into the jungle at My Son. Brick towers, weathered carvings, and a quiet, remote setting make it feel worlds away from the beach stops on other routes. It’s the pick for travelers who’d rather explore ancient history than lie on sand.

Good to know: My Son alone takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and the drive there adds real time. Comfortable shoes help on the uneven Routes, and mornings beat the midday heat.

The Direct Transfer — Best option for tight schedules

Route: Hue City → Hai Van Tunnel → Hoi An

This one skips the sightseeing on purpose. If you’ve already seen the coast, you’re short on time, or you just want to land in Hoi An as fast as possible, this is your option.

The car runs through Hai Van Tunnel instead of over the pass, cutting out the climb and the crowds at the viewpoints. Your driver will still pull over for a toilet break or a quick stretch if you need one, but there’s no sightseeing built into the day.

Good to know: This is the fastest way to travel, at around 3 hours door to door. It suits travelers who are done with sightseeing or simply need to arrive on time. Although it’s a faster route, it doesn’t offer lower price compared to the route via Hai Van pass. Because we have to pay the road fee that is considered higher cost than the gasoline.

• Hai Van Pass conditions: The pass can be foggy, windy, or wet at times. Conditions vary by season.
• Clothing and shoes: Light, breathable clothing works well. Bring a light jacket for the pass. Comfortable walking shoes help at Marble Mountains, My Son, and Bach Ma.
