What You Will Experience

Your walking tour begins at the Nine Holy Cannons, where you’ll meet your tour guide just outside the citadel walls. These giant bronze cannons, cast over 200 years ago from captured weapons, are the first sign that you’re about to enter a world built on power and legend.

From here, you’ll walk toward the mighty Ngo Mon Gate, the grand entrance where emperors once appeared before their people. Passing through its ancient archway feels like crossing into another time. Just above it sits the Ngu Phung Pavilion, or “Five Phoenix Pavilion,” where emperors once stood to announce major national events to the crowd below.

Stepping deeper into the complex, you’ll arrive at Thai Hoa Palace, the golden heart of the Imperial City. With its red and gold lacquered columns, this is where emperors once held court, and it’s easily one of the most breathtaking stops on the tour. In the past, this place was used to organize coronation ceremonies and royal birthdays of the Nguyen Kings.

From there, the path leads to the Nine Dynastic Urns, magnificent bronze vessels standing proudly in front of The Mieu Temple, the sacred space where the Nguyen emperors are honored and remembered. Here, you’ll listen to each Emperor’s stories, their own life and what happened during their reign.

Continuing on, you’ll find Dien Tho Palace, a peaceful and elegant residence that once belonged to the Queen Mothers. Its quiet gardens and gentle atmosphere offer a nice contrast to the grandeur you’ve just seen.

Finally, your walk brings you to the most mysterious part of the tour, the Forbidden Purple City, once a private world reserved only for the emperor and his household. Hidden inside is the Duyet Thi Duong Royal Theater, one of Vietnam’s oldest theaters, where royal performances once filled the air with music and color.

By the end of the walk, you won’t just have seen the Imperial City, you’ll have walked through its story, one gate, one palace, and one legend at a time.
