All three options start in Phong Nha and end at your hotel in Da Nang. What changes is how much you see in between.

Option 1: Direct Transfer — Straight to the Coast

Crossing between Hue and Da Nang, you can choose Hai Van Pass for a scenic view or Hai Van tunnel for a quicker route.

Tip: Leaving after 12:00 noon? Direct transfer is your best option — the sightseeing routes need most of a day.

Option 2: The Hue Heritage Route — Ending in Imperial Vietnam

Route: Phong Nha → Hue Imperial Citadel → Khai Dinh Tomb → Lap An Lagoon → Hai Van Pass → Da Nang (~8–9 hours)

Best for: travelers who’d rather spend their last day in Central Vietnam among royal architecture than war memorials.

• Leave Phong Nha in the morning to leave enough daylight for a relaxed pace.
• Hue Imperial Citadel: once the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty, this UNESCO-listed complex holds the Forbidden Purple City, palace halls, and temple gates that survived (and are still being restored from) decades of war. Plan on at least an hour to walk through it properly.
• A Royal Tomb: whether it’s the ornate, hillside Khai Dinh Tomb or another nearby option, this is where you get a quieter, more personal side of imperial history than the Citadel offers.
• Lap An Lagoon: Take a restful pause at this tranquil brackish lagoon, famous for oyster farming and mirror-like water reflections.
• Hai Van Pass: the “Ocean Cloud Pass” carries you the last 21 km into Da Nang, with a coffee stop at the 500-meter summit for the view everyone photographs.
• From the pass, it’s a short, easy descent into the city, ending at your hotel.

Option 3: The DMZ Route — Ending on Wartime History

Route: Phong Nha → Vinh Moc Tunnels → Hien Luong Bridge & Ben Hai River (DMZ) → Lang Co Beach → Hai Van Pass → Da Nang (~7–8 hours)

Best for: travelers who want their last stop in Central Vietnam to be about the war, not the emperors.

This route shares the same coastal finish as Option 2 — Lap An Lagoon and Hai Van Pass — but starts the day very differently:

• Vinh Moc Tunnels: a short detour off the Ho Chi Minh Trail brings you to this underground village, dug entirely by hand so families could shelter from bombing during the war. Walking through the kitchens, wells, and living quarters carved into the earth is one of the most memorable stops on this whole route.
• Hien Luong Bridge and the DMZ: following the old Ho Chi Minh Trail out of Phong Nha, your first stop is the bridge that once split Vietnam in two. A small museum and memorial sites nearby fill in the history before you continue south.
