The Vietnamese name translates directly to the Palace of Supreme Harmony. Specifically, the word “Thai” signifies supreme grandeur, while “Hoa” means complete harmony. Nguyen monarchs selected this title to promote national peace and prosperity.

The palace served as the political heart of feudal Vietnam. Royal court assemblies took place here on the 1st and 15th days of each lunar month.

Furthermore, the venue hosted official coronation ceremonies, royal birthday festivities, and foreign envoy receptions. During these events, the emperor sat upon the imperial throne. Only high-ranking royal family members and four senior officials stood inside the main hall. Meanwhile, other mandarins gathered outside based on their official ranks.

Today, Thai Hoa Palace holds global cultural significance. It is a key monument within the Complex of Hue Monuments. Consequently, UNESCO recognized this imperial complex as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Historical Timeline and Restoration Legacy

Construction started on February 2, 1805, under Emperor Gia Long. Workers completed the initial palace structure in October 1805. Later, Emperor Minh Mang enlarged and shifted the hall southward in 1833 during his major city layout overhaul.

The Throne Palace undergone several historical renovations. In 1923, engineers restored the complex for King Khai Dinh’s 40th birthday in 1924. Additionally, repairs occurred during the reigns of Emperor Thanh Thai and Emperor Bao Dai.

Modern preservation teams restored the hall during 1960, 1970, 1981, 1985, and 1992. Every measurement and material choice had a purpose.

The palace covers a total area of 1,360 square meters. Its floor sits one meter above the courtyard. It rises 2.35 meters above the surrounding ground. This elevation gave the building a commanding presence.

One standout feature is the trùng thiềm điệp ốc (double-house structure). Two halls connect to form one continuous space, with one roof overlapping the other. Eighty ironwood pillars hold up this structure, each carved with dragons and clouds. These carvings symbolized the meeting between the king and his mandarins.

The front and main halls link through a crab-shell roof design. This arched ceiling creates smooth, unbroken interior space. Builders used this style because Vietnamese architecture couldn’t match the height of Chinese palaces. So they raised the outer roof and lowered the inner one instead.

The glazed-tile roof splits into three overlapping sections. This clever layering reduces pressure on the pillars below. It also makes the palace appear taller from a distance.

Numbers 5 and 9 appear throughout the design. Staircases outside the palace use either 5 or 9 steps. Nine dragons decorate the roof, and nine more appear on the throne itself. Locals believe 5 represents the center of the universe. Nine, meanwhile, stands for spiritual perfection.

The Palace of Supreme Harmony Visiting Information

Planning ahead makes any visit smoother.
