This is the straight shot: 330 km along the AH1 highway, about 6 hours door to door, with only short rest stops. Your driver is licensed and speaks basic English, and the car is air-conditioned and comfortable for the ride. You’ll be picked up and dropped off exactly where you ask — hotel, homestay, or airport.

Tip: If you’re starting after 12:00 noon, direct transfer is your only realistic option for the day — the sightseeing routes need a morning start.

Option 2: Da Nang to Phong Nha Via Hue Highlights

Route: Da Nang → Hai Van Pass → Lap An Lagoon → Khai Dinh Tomb → Hue Imperial Citadel → Phong Nha (~8-9 hours)

Best for: first-time visitors who want to see Hai Van Pass and Hue’s UNESCO sites without adding an extra day to their trip.

• Depart around 8:00 AM (Recommended) — this gives enough daylight to enjoy every stop without rushing.
• Hai Van Pass: the “Ocean Cloud Pass,” 21 km of switchbacks 500 meters above the sea. Your driver stops at the summit for coffee and the kind of view that ends up on everyone’s Instagram.
• Lap An Lagoon: a quiet stop for photos over still water and floating fishing rafts.
• Khai Dinh Tomb: built 1920–1931, this tomb mixes Vietnamese and European styles — mosaic dragons, concrete facades, and a dramatic staircase up the hillside. It’s the most visually striking of the royal tombs.
• Hue Imperial Citadel: the political heart of the Nguyen Dynasty for over a century. Even with war damage, the restored palaces, gates, and courtyards give a real sense of imperial Vietnam. Budget at least an hour here.
• From the Citadel, it’s roughly 4 more hours to Phong Nha, where your driver drops you at your hotel.

Option 3: The DMZ Route — War History Along the Way

Route: Da Nang → Hai Van Pass → Lap An Lagoon → Hien Luong Bridge & Ben Hai River → Vinh Moc Tunnels → Phong Nha

Best for: travelers interested in Vietnam’s wartime history, not just palaces and pagodas.

This route shares the same scenic coastal start as Option 2 — Hai Van Pass and Lap An Lagoon — but turns inland afterward toward the old dividing line between North and South Vietnam:

• Hien Luong Bridge: once the physical border between North and South Vietnam, now a memorial site with a small museum.
• Vinh Moc Tunnels: an entire underground village dug by hand to shelter families from bombing — kitchens, wells, and living quarters carved into the earth. Walking through it is a far more visceral history lesson than any museum plaque.
• The final stretch follows part of the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail into Phong Nha, ending at your hotel or homestay.
